FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Blue Lily Products:

Why are organic products more expensive?

Organic products are generally more expensive than their non-organic counterparts. This is because most of the conventional spices and herbs are not tested for pathogens, chemical pesticides and do not meet the high-quality standard of organic spices. Quality assurance, product tracking, organic certifications (state & federal), usage of a biodynamic environment, bio manure & compost, environmentally sustainable farming techniques, and testing adds to the additional cost.

Why is using the organic product as spices & herbs important in your food?

We use a very small quantity of spices and herbs in our daily lives. why use organic spices? We have to look at this issue very closely. For example, 100 gm of spices are made from 1000 gm of raw product. The number of chemical pesticides and other chemicals has a very high concentration in a small pinch. If you use Cinnamon or Black pepper every day, the amount of chemical consumption is huge over a period of time.

What is the shelf life of herbs and spices?

While organic products as herbs and spices generally don’t spoil, they will lose their potency over time. How the herbs and spices are stored will play a large role in how long they retain their potency. If stored in airtight containers, such as glass jars, and kept in a cool, dark, dry place, whole herbs and spices can last up to 3-4 years. We make every effort to ensure that you receive well-preserved herbs and spices. Bluelilyorganics use food grade BPA free polyfoil bags with a re-sealable zipper closure, which protect the contents from exposure to light and moisture, to preserve the freshness, aroma, and potency of our products. We do indicate the ‘Best Use by’ dates on the products as well.

Why does Blue Lily Organics use plastic stand-up pouches, bottles and jars for its products?

At Blue Lily Organics we take multiple factors into account in making decisions, including quality, customer service, economics and our impact on the environment. The plastic that we use is PET (#1) and HDPE (#2), which is highly recyclable. Fewer resources (water, electricity, mining equipment, etc.) are used in the production of the plastic bottles versus glass; and given the lighter weight and durability of these plastics compared to glass, there is a smaller carbon footprint created by the shipping of these materials. PET and HDPE are BPA-free and considered as safe as containers, though they should not be re-used.

What is the best way to store the bulk herbs and how long do they last?

We recommend that our customers store their herbs in air-tight packaging, out of direct sunlight, and at room temperature or in the refrigerator. When stored properly herbs can last for many years.

Some of your products indicate they are RAW. What does that mean?

These products are not refined, not cooked, not treated with chemicals, not irradiated or not subject any solvents. Several of our organic products are tagged as RAW.

Why is it important to go Organic Products?

Organic farming gives priority both to the health of the environment and the health of the person who will consume the goods that are grown…you! Not only does it avoid the use of potentially harmful synthetic chemicals such as growth hormones and pesticides, but it also promotes the use of methods and practices which yield healthy and robust crops.

In the U.S., for a product to be “certified” organic means a third-party agency must inspect and verify that the company is upholding the standards set by the USDA. The USDA website explains that organic certification means “the food or other agricultural product has been produced through approved methods that integrate cultural, biological, and mechanical practices that foster cycling of resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, and genetic engineering may not be used.”

Blue Lily Organics makes every effort to obtain herbs that are organically grown and certified. Our partners work with the farmers to continuously educate them on organic farming methods, and our herbs are sourced from USDA certified organic farms.

Are Blue Lily Organics’ organic products produced in the United States?

Blue Lily Organics’ organic products are mostly packaged in the United States. We source our organic products from all over the world.

Does Blue Lily Organics test for heavy metals and microbial levels?

Yes, Blue Lily Organics tests every batch of herbs for heavy metals and microbial levels using independent laboratories. It is important to understand that heavy metals exist in our natural resources, including the soil, air, and water. This is not limited to any particular region but is from a natural occurrence in the Earth as well as the widespread result of industrialization. Therefore, it is very difficult to find a naturally grown organic product, including sometimes the food we consume, that does not have some levels of heavy metals. We ensure that our products adhere to the standards of ANSI 173 and AHPA by testing the raw herbs when it first comes in and then testing the final product once it has been packaged in our unique formulations.
